Deborah Greaves applies a wealth of diverse and unique experience to provide consumer goods clients, specifically in the apparel, retail and tech sectors, with IP, corporate and employment related legal services. For well over a decade prior to joining Brutzkus Gubner, she was in-house counsel at top apparel companies, including True Religion Jeans, allowing her to understand the inner workings of a company and the mindsets of in-house executives and corporate counsel. Ms. Greaves aims to be a partner to a business, and resolve existing and ongoing issues, while anticipating others before they happen. She has a reputation for being proactive rather than reactive and believes that a company’s best defense is its offense.
Ms. Greaves has particular strength in developing and monetizing IP and brand enforcement strategies for companies operating internationally, domestically or both. She assists with negotiating licensing and distribution agreements, international domain registration strategy, including acquiring country specific domain names, and aggressively defending against any counterfeiting or infringement that could damage or dilute a company’s brand.
She assists with corporate creation, corporate governance, regulatory compliance and employment-related matters, such as effective employment agreements, severance packages and employee handbook creation. Her agreements focus on key clauses and provisions that protect employers. As a junior practitioner, she held valuable corporate secretarial posts and maintained corporate record books, experience that she uses to provide a greater level of protection to corporate entities. Ms. Greaves also has vast experience reviewing commercial leases and consumer protection policies and, when necessary, she can oversee and drive litigation strategy to minimize the costs of ongoing disputes.
Ms. Greaves is an advisor to the Executive Committee of the California Lawyers Association (formerly the California State Bar Intellectual Property Law Section), after serving as its Chair, and has penned the “Counterfeit Corner” column in New Matter, the Section’s quarterly publication. She is a frequent speaker on IP and fashion law subjects, having given presentations in Canada and China, as well as throughout the United States. The International Trademark Association recently appointed her to its North American Anti-counterfeiting Committee.
She was named one of “California’s Top 20 In-House Counsel” by the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journal, received the “Global Counsel of the Year Award” for Intellectual Property by International Law Office, and has been shortlisted as “Corporate Counsel of the Year” by the Los Angeles Business Journal and for the “Fashion, Cosmetics & Luxury Goods Team of the Year” Industry Award by World Trademark Review (WTR). Chambers USA also recognized her in “Women in Law” for her outstanding contribution to mentoring. In 2018, she was named to the prestigious “Best Lawyers” list by “Best Lawyers in America.”
Ms. Greaves helped to launch Loyola Law School’s Fashion Law Program and serves as an adjunct professor, teaching courses in Fashion Law Business Transactions and Retail & Fashion Law. Ms. Greaves is an advocate for children’s rights, previously serving on the Board of Directors of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Los Angeles Chapter.
